Manchester Accommodation Business Improvement District (ABID) initiative

A groundbreaking initiative is being introduced in Manchester City Centre and Salford next month.  The Manchester ABID is an initiative led by the city’s hotel and serviced apartment providers to help create new events and additional activities that will attract more people to visit and stay in Manchester and Salford. It will also contribute to the enhancement of overall guest experience and help to expand the city’s visitor economy.

The City Visitor Charge is applicable to all bookings from 1st April 2023 and is a supplementary £1 charge per room/unit per night for guests, which is added to the final accommodation bill; this charge is not included within any agreed negotiated fixed rate and is a supplementary charge. 24hr rates will have the charge applied and this should be shown as a separate charge on proposals, contracts and invoices etc.

This statutory charge is collected from all paid accommodation establishments that fall into the Manchester ABID zone ( see map below) and is similar to established schemes in cities across Europe and North America.

The City Visitor Charge is applicable to all bookings from 1 April 2023 whether new or existing.  This is a taxable item so the charge is £1.00 ex. VAT, a total £1.20 inc. VAT at the current rate and can be billed back (it is up to the venue if they agree to do this, so far all providers have said they will but it would be prudent to check individual agreements/arrangements) with the room rate, but shown as a separate charge and is not commissionable (billback is subject to existing credit facilities and agreements being in place with each agency/venue).

You are encouraged to inform any clients of the City Visitor Charge and to check account instructions and existing bookings that will be affected.
