Village Hotel Group Achieves Gold Ecosmart Status

Village Hotels has underlined its commitment to sustainability by securing Greengage’s ECOsmart Gold accreditation across all 33 hotels in the group.

ECOsmart is a certification programme specifically designed for the hospitality sector by sustainability specialists, Greengage. The Gold award recognises that Village Hotels has fully embraced environmental sustainability throughout all areas of the business with a robust plan to reduce both consumption and carbon emissions.

Village Hotels has worked closely with Greengage to institute measures such as diverting 98% of waste away from landfill, using 100% renewable energy and starting a programme to install EV chargers at all sites.

Village Hotels’ ESG strategy has three key pillars: Stay Green, People and Community.  The ECOsmart certification falls within the Stay Green pillar that focusses on limiting the company’s carbon impact.

A team effort was required to achieve certification across the group.  Implementation was made smoother with the assistance of the existing team of Sustainability Stars at each hotel who work alongside the general managers across the complete ESG strategy.

John Stokoe, ESG Manager at Village Hotels says, “We were drawn to ECOsmart because it’s a marque that is widely recognised by our customers.  The certification allows us to demonstrate our sustainability efforts that have been independently verified against set criteria.

“Sustainability is very much at the heart of our ESG policy and ECOsmart has helped us by assessing our strengths and weaknesses.  It’s also allowed us to highlight what we’re good at and identify what we need to do next to achieve our objective of moving the group up to ECOsmart Platinum level.

“The certification process itself was smooth and we particularly appreciated the hands-on support from the Greengage team to get every Village Hotel over the line quickly and efficiently.”

Andrew Perolls, CEO for Greengage ECOsmart commented, “We are so pleased to be supporting Village’s sustainability journey. The consistent standards applied across the whole hotel portfolio are testament to Village’s dedication to embedding environmental and social responsibility throughout the business.”
