RCP London Events celebrates women’s hidden role in history with new exhibition

A highlight of the exhibition is Making Visible, a striking new art installation by doctoral researcher Catherine James. Hundreds of early printed books in the venue’s Dorchester Library, regarded in the 17th century as the country’s most important library of learning outside Oxford and Cambridge, are wrapped in conservation-grade paper, drawing attention to the pivotal role of women in shaping the library.

Visitors can also see the first-ever display of a portrait of Lady Grace Pierrepont, whose 17th-century donation of books helped rebuild the collection after the Great Fire of London. A series of events will run alongside the exhibition, including Museum Lates, talks, storytelling performances, children’s crafts and illuminated lettering workshops.

For organisers hosting events at RCP London Events, the museum offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to bring history and heritage directly into their event programme. Working closely with the RCP’s Archives, Heritage and Museum Services team, the venue offers curated tours, talks and exclusive access to rare collections, elevating conferences, dinners and celebrations into immersive cultural experiences.

Commenting on the new exhibition, RCP’s lead curator Katie Birkwood, said: “The exhibition reveals the extraordinary depth and character of one of the most important physicians’ libraries in England. For over 500 years, the RCP’s collection has been shaped by curiosity, generosity, and determination, surviving fires, upheavals, and changing medical practice. We are proud to share how these books not only transformed the way physicians learned and worked but also reflect the broader intellectual life of every age they have passed through.”

Head of Commercial Events Natacha Allen added: “‘A body of knowledge’ brings the Dorchester Library’s remarkable history to life, offering guests attending events at RCP London Events the unique chance to experience this rich history first-hand and discover the crucial, yet hidden role women played in shaping culture and knowledge. The library provides an enchanting and unique backdrop for events, offering a blend of historical elegance and modern functionality and can be hired for events including conferences, receptions and dinners.”
